“Long overdue” was a phrase that came to mind when EA Motive announced it’s developing an all-new single-player, third-person, action-adventureĀ Iron ManĀ game in partnership with Marvel.

While the fan favourite Avenger has previously been the focus of the odd standalone, a playable component of Square Enix’s clunky Avengers game, and even a virtual reality experience courtesy of Camouflaj x Sony Interactive Entertainment, EA Motive’s latest endeavour promises to be the first Iron Man game actually worth the time of day.

The game in question will apparently feature a completely original narrative that “taps into the rich history of Iron Man,” channelling the complexity, charisma, plus creative genius of Tony Stark, and enabling players to feel what itā€™s like to truly be Iron Man. Hopefully, this means sandbox exploration amongst the clouds a la Insomniac Games’ phenomenal Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. And a killer JARVIS HUD.

The Montreal-based studio is currently being led by Olivier Proulx, who has a history working on past Marvel titles such as Guardians of the Galaxy. Proulx is joined by a “dedicated team of passionate industry veterans” including Ian Frazier (Star Wars: Squadrons, Mass Effect: Andromeda), MaĆ«lenn Lumineau (Immortals: Fenyx Rising, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey), and JF Poirier.

ā€œItā€™s an honour and privilege to have the opportunity to make a video game based on one of the most iconic superheroes in entertainment today,ā€ said Olivier Proulx.

ā€œWe have a great opportunity to create a new and unique story that we can call our own. Marvel is encouraging us to create something fresh. We have a lot of freedom, which is so engaging for the team.ā€

ā€œWe are thrilled to collaborate with the talented team at Motive Studio to bring their original vision of one of Marvelā€™s most important, powerful, and beloved characters,ā€ said Bill Rosemann, Marvel Games Vice President & Creative Director.

ā€œTheir experience delivering both established entertainment worlds and thrilling gameplay ā€” combined with their authentic passion for the armoured icon ā€” will fuel our quest to deliver a love letter to a legendary hero in the form of the ultimate Iron Man video game.ā€

In the same blog post that signalled the intention to release an Iron Man game, EA Motive also confirmed it’s in the final stages of developing the upcoming Dead Space remake, which arrives on January 27th of 2023. But that’s not the only thing they’ve got cooking in the kitchen.

Sources indicate Black Panther is the subject of another Marvel title in development by EA Games (or one of its numerous subsidiaries), currently referred to under the codename ā€œProject Rainier.ā€

“The game is conceptualised as an open-world single-player game in which the players actually get to become the new Black Panther,” writes Jason Collins of Giant Freakin Robot.

“The Directā€™s report is somewhat unclear on whether this is an adaptation of Black Pantherā€™s origin story or just another Black Panther action title.”

Like Iron Man, the character – portrayed by the late great Chadwick Boseman on screens – was a playable component of Square Enix’s Avengers game. Hopefully the folks over at Electronic Arts does it justice.
