Hollywood seems to be on something of a pro-military tear lately. Universal Pictures has acquired an untitled original project starring Tom Hardy and Channing Tatum about the Afghanistan evacuation from writer/director George Nolfi – who you may be familiar with as the scribe behind Ocean’s Twelve, The Bourne Ultimatum, and The Adjustment Bureau.

This “ripped from the headlines” drama will take inspiration from the reported true stories surrounding three former special forces team members who, according to Collider, “… bravely risk[ed] their own lives to head back into the mounting madness alongside their Afghan counterparts, on a mission to rescue multiple families and allies left behind amid the confusion and panic during the swift fall of Afghanistan.” As you can imagine, more than a few people aren’t happy about the film industry profiting from the tragedy before the dust has even settled.

While Tom Hardy and Channing Tatum have obviously been locked in as two for three aforementioned special forces team members who put it all on the line during the Afghanistan evacuation, the third has yet to be announced. Hardy and Taum have also signed on to produce alongside Jules Daly, in addition to Reid Carolin and Peter Kiernan of Free Association, while George Nolfi will also executive produce. At this stage, not much else is known.

Between this, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Havoc – the upcoming Netflix action flick directed by Gangs of London creator Gareth Evans – the final season of BBC’s Peaky Blinders, as well as the announcement Taboo season 2 is “still happening“, Tom Hardy’s plate has been pretty full recently.

Channing Tatum, on the other hand, is currently gearing up for a way more lighthearted affair concerning military Dog – a comedy involving an Army Ranger named Briggs and his Belgian Malinois companion Lulu who race down the Pacific Coast in time to catch their best friend’s and handler’s funeral.
