If you’re anything like me, by now, you will have binged Amazon Prime Video‘s Mr & Mrs Smith in its entirety — right through to that cliffhanger ending which practically demands a second season. But exactly when can we expect Mr & Mrs Smith season 2?

Similar to the original 1996 series and 2004 Doug Liman film of the same name, this inventive reboot series follows the eponymous John (Donald Glover) and Jane Smith (Maya Erskine): spies who are paired by a mysterious agency that offers wealth, world travel, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan in exchange for a high-risk life of espionage-based servitude.

“I’m not a big fan of remakes, so this was kind of a big deal to kind of take it on,” Glover, who also co-created and executive-produced alongside Francesca Sloane, told Entertainment Tonight.

“Once I saw the original, I was like, ‘This is a good date movie.’ And I was like, ‘Maybe I could make a good date show out of it?’ Like, you know, something me and my wife could watch together.”

And what a cracking date show it is. Here’s what we know about Mr & Mrs Smith season 2 so far.

Everything We Know About Mr & Mrs Smith Season 2

[WARNING: Major Spoilers Ahead]

Has Mr & Mrs Smith season 2 been confirmed by Amazon Prime Video?

At the time of this writing, Amazon Prime Video has yet to officially greenlight Mr & Mrs Smith season 2. Though everyone involved seems pretty game to deliver a second instalment.

“I think that there’s definitely a lot more story to tell here,” Sloane said to Entertainment Weekly.

“And I think that we definitely feel like this is a fully satisfied story if it were to just live on its own. But it definitely has more legs to keep going, that’s for sure.”

She added: “I feel like we’ve really earned the finale in terms of its gloriousness, but I also feel like people who have never even heard of the original IP of Mr & Mrs Smith will watch that and feel like it is a well-rounded, exciting, shoot-’em-up romance with a really interesting ending. And I think that the ending is something that will have a lot of people talking.”

Fingers crossed.

Mr & Mrs Smith Season 2 Release Date Cast Trailer News

What will Mr & Mrs Smith season 2 be about?

In the opening sequence of the first episode (‘First Date’), we witness the brutal firefight execution of another John (Alexander Skarsgard) and Jane Smith (Eiza Gonzalez) who are “tired of running.” Ostensibly because they’ve wronged the agency in some way.

We later learn through Donald Glover and Maya Erskine’s John and Jane Smith that paired operatives work under quite unforgiving circumstances — a three-strike failure system. Every botched mission obviously leads to a strike, and while a consequence is never explicitly outlined, considering the precedent set by the aforementioned opening sequence, you can imagine the severity of their punishment.

As the titular Mr & Mrs Smith’s cover relationship blossoms into one with real romantic dimensions, complete with all the complexities and dramas of a regular marriage, the tension culminates in a series of mission fails that add up to the magic number: three. The closing scene involves Glover’s John Smith reporting the final nail in the proverbial coffin to their handler, whom they refer to as “Hihi.”

Mr & Mrs Smith Season 2 Release Date Cast Trailer News

Mr & Mrs Smith season 2 will ostensibly address this immediately. Although there are hints that the severe punishment we all have in mind could be a red herring. In the lead-up to the finale, Hihi is seen to subtly undermine their relationship in an effort to assign Erskine’s Jane Smith to somebody more competent, and potentially explore her aptitude for extra high-risk tasks (as opposed to her current high-risk designation).

On the subject of Hihi, we theorise their identity could very well be that of their nosey neighbour Harris (Paul Dano), who is shown to share some common interests with Jane, and on one occasion, even prepared her some homemade soup when she was sick. It would stand to reason that John and Jane’s handler would want to keep a close eye on them, hence the proximity; and the lack of screentime for someone as high-profile as Dano throughout season 1 is suspicious, to say the least.

Other loose ends include rival company agent Bev (Michaela Coel), who was the assassination target of their last failed mission; evading both John and Jane due to a combination of miscommunication, mistrust, and Machiavellian interference from Hihi. Who is this rival company? What do John and Jane want with Bev? All questions to be answered in due course.

While they likely won’t be revisited, showrunner and co-creator Francesca Sloane has previously alluded to missions that were penned by never committed to camera,

“There are so many [missions] that didn’t make the cut… We had one where they were at Six Flags, and they didn’t understand why. That was one,” she explained.

“We had one where, like, literally, the whole thing was this entire mission happening, and you just never find out what they went through inside. But we’re like, ‘That might be too pretentious for an hour.’ So yeah, there were many that ended up not making the cut.”

There are some little moments that I missed just for character reasons.

Do we know the Mr & Mrs Smith season 2 cast?

Mr & Mrs Smith Season 2 Release Date Cast Trailer News

The only two cast members we can be certain will return (if they ever return) are Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. Beyond that, it’s anybody’s guess.

In the same discipline as FX’s The Bear season 2, the first season of Mr & Mrs Smith showcased enough restraint to use their stacked guest star lineup effectively without milking them to the point of exhaustion.

The short-lived appearances of Alexander Skarsgard, Eiza Gonzalez, and John Turturro, for example, served the ongoing story perfectly. While the single-episode arcs involving Ron Perlman’s Toby Hellinger and Sarah Paulson’s couples therapist were nothing short of delightful.

There is, however, a chance we’ll catch another glimpse of Wagner Moura and Parker Posey as the agency’s other Mr John & Mrs Smith (a parody of the insufferable couple friends you tolerate just to hang out in a quad); and given Bev is canonically still on the loose, there’s a chance we’ll catch another glimpse of Michaela Coel.

Whatever the case, expect some more eyebrow-raising names.

When is the Mr & Mrs Smith season 2 release date?

Assuming Amazon Prime Video gives Francesca Sloane and Donald Glover the green light in the coming months, we can expect the Mr & Mrs Smith season 2 release date to fall on any time between early to mid-2025.

This is also assuming the ever-busy Glover and fellow multi-hyphenate talent Maya Eskrine, who has never been more in demand, can fit it within their professional schedules.
