The fascination surrounding sporting legends and their respective mythologies seems to be reaching a fever pitch in 2020. Setting the rich subject matter of sports documentaries aside – of which there are plenty with even more coming – Netflix has decided to explore the mythology of none other than Formula 1’s Ayrton Senna da Silva… only through a more fictional lens. Yes, we’re getting a Netflix Ayrton Senna drama series.
According to the streaming giant’s newsroom post, the upcoming 8-part release will be an opportunity for fans to “cross the finish line not with Senna – but with Beco or Becão” (Senna’s nicknames among friends and family). As Netflix assures the public, this won’t simply be about the headline-making moments of the late driver’s career, but also “an invitation to explore the personality and family relationships” of the three-time Formula 1 champion.
Netflix’s Ayrton Senna drama series will open with his career debut shortly after he arrives in England to compete at the F1600, depicting all the great triumphs and obstacles, all the human moments in between, building up to the climatic – and unfortunate – events of the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, Italy. The fateful incident which led to his very passing.
“It is very special to be able to announce that we will tell the story that only a few people know about him,” says Viviane Senna, sister to Ayrton.
“The Senna family is committed to making this project something totally unique and unprecedented. And no one better than Netflix, that has a global reach, to be our partner.”
“Senna is the type of person we need,” says producers Fabiano and Caio Gullane.
“A young man that fought for his dream and faced many obstacles in order to represent a nation. Senna unites Brazil.”
In addition to being three-time Formula 1 world champion during the 1988, 1990, and 1991 seasons; Senna’s decade-long career also includes a total of 41 wins, 65 poles, as well as being recognised as the best + most influential among Formula 1 drivers. Now that’s a legacy that’s tough to beat.
Netflix’s Ayrton Senna drama series is scheduled for release in 2022. No further production details – nor production timelines – have been provided at this point in time.
