The World’s Most Important Champagne Collection Is Up For Auction

The Trinity Collection, reported as the most important collection of mature Champagne ever, is going to auction this week as the world’s largest wine auction house, Acker, prods the hammer with a series of absolute indulgence. And by indulgence, we’re talking 877 bottles, 323 magnums, 10 Jeroboams, 2 Methuselahs, and 30 half-bottles of Champagne from some of the world’s largest brands, dating back to the legendary 1911 vintage. This Trinity Collection Champagne auction will be one of the ages, with three cellars worth of wine up for an expected sale of US$10 million (AU$12.9 million).

Amongst the selection of wines are drops from the famed Domaine de la Romanee Conti estate in Burgundy, which are expected to fetch up to US$3 million (AU$3.8 million). The DRC, widely considered amongst the top wine producers in the world, is just one of several top Acker clients being showcased as part of The Trinity Collection Champagne auction. Other highlights include 128 bottles of Salon with vintages all the way back to 1928, 36 bottles of Pol Rodger with vintages dating back to 1921, 214 various formats from Louis Roederer dating back to 1928, 114 bottles of Dom Perignon and Moet & Chandon dating back to 1911, as well as 280 bottles of Krug dating back to 1943.

An authentication process with extreme levels of scrutiny has been employed to validate all of these bottlings, which rarely come to market. Richard Juhlin, the world’s most respected Champagne expert, has collaborated with Acker to introduce The Trinity Collection and help the house sort through the massive offering. The last time he came on board with Acker was 2011, when his expertise was required to help with an auction of 19th century Champagne bottles that had been fished from a shipwreck in the Baltic Sea – at the time, breaking the record for the most expensive bottle of Champagne ever sold with a hammer price of €30,000 (AU$47,291).

“To offer such depth and breadth of Salon, Krug, Bollinger, Louis Roederer, Pol Roger and Pommery back to the 1920s, and Most & Chandon back to the 1910s, is truly a rare privilege for myself as an auctioneer,” said Acker Chairman John Kapon.

“Champagne lovers around the world are hereby put on notice. Few auctions like this occur in one’s lifetime, and I hope buyer’s the world over take note of this exemplary selection of wines from three of the world’s greatest living collectors.”
