There are two ways to fly Business Class to the US West Coast. Pay $10K+ and go direct, or add three hours to the journey via Nadi, and save thousands. Fiji Airways flew me Business Class from Sydney to Los Angeles via Nadi on the A350-900 to test whether that trade-off actually holds up.
The ground game is strong. Through its oneworld membership, youโre walking into the Qantas Business lounge in Sydney (and LA on the return). Same pre-flight experience, without the usual price tag.
The service is the differentiator. Ground or air, every touchpoint carries the same Bula warmth: relaxed, unhurried, and effortless.

The A350-900 runs 33 lie-flat beds in a 1-2-1 layout with direct aisle access. Premium for the short hop to Nadi, and delivers on the red-eye into LA. The shoulder sash belt is a minor gripe for anyone whoโs flown enough to have opinions about seatbelts.
We departed Sydney at 2 PM, and the first leg to Nadi was just over three hours. Long enough for lunch and complimentary Wi-Fi capable enough to clear whateverโs left of the work day.
The stopover is brief โ yes, youโll feel the humidity for about 90 seconds, then youโre in the Premier Lounge with a bookable shower. From there, itโs back on board for the overnight ten-hour leg, departing at 9:40 PM Fiji time โ 8:40 PM Sydney time โ landing at midday in LA. On a red-eye where sleep is the whole point, the timing works in your favour.

Fiji Airwaysโ Dine on Demand service removes the fixed service window, so you can eat on your schedule. I ate straight away to maximise sleep. With 14 dinner options, itโs one of the more playful menus on this route: Pacific Rim dishes alongside brisket sliders, grilled chicken tacos, a poke bowl, and Pepe Saya butter with your bread. Itโs elevated but unfussy, and thatโs why it works. Most importantly, it tasted great.
Amenities are offered on request rather than via a standard kit, a deliberate sustainability call that works fine in practice. Any gaps in the entertainment systemโs Disney and HBO library are sorted with Wi-Fi. I had a light dinner, clocked seven hours of sleep at a 94% efficiency score, and still had time for a long black before descent. On a trans-Pacific crossing, thatโs the metric that matters.
So is it the smartest play? If speed matters, fly direct. If value does, the answerโs here. If you donโt want a five-figure conversation, Fiji Airways is one of the best ways to cross the Pacific right now.
