After years of delays, the premiere for Top Gun: Maverick finally went ahead recently, featuring a red carpet filled with Hollywood’s who’s who. Naturally, as the star of the much-anticipated follow-up film, Tom Cruise was dressed in his black-tie best, but the timepiece on his wrist got our attention as one of the most impressive watches at the premiere.

The watch in question was the sporty and sophisticated Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin in white gold, a timepiece that has gained an enthusiastic following over the last few years. It’s easy to see why this complicated member of the Overseas family is so popular, as a watch that can handle an active lifestyle, but remains comfortably svelte with a case that is remarkably just 8.1mm thick.

It’s certainly not a petite watch, with the white gold case measuring 41.5mm in diameter and the matching precious metal bracelet combining to 194g on your wrist. However, when you consider just how complex the movement is inside, you understand what an impressive feat of watchmaking it really is.

The Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin is powered by the calibre 1120 QP/1, an automatic perpetual calendar movement comprised of 274 components, despite being just 4.05mm thick. Ticking away at 19,800vph, it offers a power reserve of 40 hours and won’t need any adjusting until the year 2100.

With so much information packed into the dial, you’d think it’d be impossible to read, however, the beautiful sunburst blue dial is large enough to be legible thanks to the balanced symmetry of its layout. The watch also features a quick-change mechanism for its straps, allowing you to switch between the white gold bracelet or a leather or rubber strap with ease.

It’s great to see Tom Cruise back on the red carpet for his antics as a fighter pilot ace, solidifying his position as one of the last great action heroes of his generation. Despite his not insignificant net worth, Tom Cruise isn’t a man that has been well-known for his collection of watches, but with the recent addition of this Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin, that could be set to change.

If you’re keen on your own Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin, it comes with an RRP of $158,000 and is currently available at your nearest Vacheron Constantin boutique.
