It’s been almost three decades since Adam Sandler‘s Happy Gilmore slapshot drove its way into our hearts. Now, the beloved 1996 comedy flick about a failed hockey player turned golfing phenom is finally getting a sequel with Happy Gilmore 2. At least according to original cast member Christopher McDonald.

During a recent interview with Cleveland’s 92.3 The Fan, the man behind the iconically villainous Shooter McGavin gave the world an extremely promising update.

“I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this.’ I said, ‘What?’” recounted Christopher McDonald.

“He shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.”

“Maybe you should cut that out [of this audio] because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit.”

Considering Adam Sandler’s ongoing production and licensing deal with Netflix, which was pivotal in crowning him the highest-paid actor of 2023, speculation has indicated Happy Gilmore 2 will most likely land at the streamer (assuming the price is right). In the words of Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos: “There’s no such thing as too much Sandler.”

A few years prior to all this, the internet was sent into a frenzy when Adam Sandler publicly stated his commitment to the long-awaited sequel; this occurred shortly after both he and Christopher McDonald reunited with a tongue-in-cheek social media exchange for the original film’s 25th anniversary.

“It has not been discussed, but it has certainly been discussed on the internet,” Sandler said while appearing on The Dan Patrick Show in 2021.

“Believe me — that Senior Tour idea, it would be so amazing… Yes, you can greenlight this… I don’t know if [we can do it].”

“Yes, I would love to do it,” McDonald added, before noting that he was “double in” for Happy Gilmore 2.

“Everyone’s been screaming for it, like Adam said, on the internet. I just gotta say, it would be a complete blast. The Senior Tour with us too, oh my God.”

To paraphrase Shooter McGavin himself: drive for show, nostalgia-bait for dough.
