Last year, Patek Philippe made the bombshell announcement that the iconic Nautilus ref. 5711 was to be discontinued before releasing two farewell references in olive green and much-hyped Tiffany & Co. blue. Fast forward to 2022 and its successor has been officially announced in the all-new Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 5811G, as well as two additional members of the complicated Nautilus family in the ref. 5990A and the ref. 5712R.

Let’s get into them.

Patek Phillipe Nautilus Ref. 5811/1G

Kicking things off with the brand new reference number 5811G and we have the closest relative to the coveted ref. 5711, however, instead of the everyday stainless steel of the old Nautilus, we’re met with 41mm of white gold. This is 1mm wider than the discontinued ref 5711, while the other notable update to the case is the two-part construction that nods to the original Nautilus ref. 3700 “Jumbo.”

The dial is a sporty navy blue that works very nicely as a backdrop for the white-gold hour markers and hands, which are filled with white luminescent coating, while the self-winding 26-330 SC calibre inside is the same as the previous generation. Another significant update is the integrated white gold bracelet that now features a lockable comfort adjustment system, allowing for 4mm of additional length to be added when the weather gets warm.

Next up is the ref. 5712R, which isn’t a new reference, but is the first time we’ve seen the much-loved Nautilus Moon Phase executed in rose gold with an integrated bracelet. With a diameter of 40mm and a thickness of just 8.52mm, it remains one of the best luxury sports watches on the market today.

In addition to its new bracelet, the dial of the ref. 5712R has been updated with a warmly graduated colour scheme that fades from caramel brown at its centre to a darker, nearly black tone at its edges. Just like the ref. 5811, the bracelet features the new lockable adjustment system for an extra 4mm of wrist wiggle room, perfect for the added heft of this solid gold beauty.

Finally, the ref. 5990A arrived with a bang that will have Patek collectors around the world rushing to their supercars to visit their nearest boutique. Previously only available in steel with a black dial, or rose gold with a blue dial, Patek Philippe is finally offering this travel watch chronograph in the iconic blue steel combination that made the Nautilus one of the most popular watches on the planet.

Combining the two most practical complications in watchmaking, the chronograph and the GMT, this new ref. 5990A is powered by the vertical-clutch equipped calibre CH 28-520 C FUS, serving up 55 hours of power reserve. Its bracelet has also been updated with a micro-adjust capability, arguably making it a perfect traveller’s watch.
