What’s new in Brisbane? While the city isn’t quite as relentless (as Sydney or Melbourne) when it comes to new openings, there are still a fair chunk of freshly unveiled restaurants to acquaint yourself with whilst spending time in the River City.

We refresh this round-up of the best new restaurants in Brisbane every month, keeping you up to date on where you should be eating. From West End and Hamilton to the Fortitude Valley, Newstead, and everywhere in between.

Best New Restaurants In Brisbane For 2023

1. Pilloni, West End

Pilloni, a new Sardinian restaurant in Brisbane’s West End, is one of the city’s biggest new restaurants. Owners Andrea Contin and Calentina Vigni, who also run La Lupa, opened this kitchen in February with a dedication to local produce from both land and sea.

2. TAMA, Fortitude Valley

As the elegant new restaurant powering the new-look GPO precinct, TAMA has a lot riding on it. GPO’s resurgence banks a lot on the culinary expertise of Richard Ousby and Alan Hunter.

Together, they help steer TAMA’s produce-forward approach towards using the flavours of the Scenic Rim, Granite Belt, Darling Downs and North Queensland.

3. Settimo, Brisbane CBD

Guy Grossi expands his empire with Settimo. Presented as the new signature restaurant at The Westin Brisbane, this kitchen is all about the sun, sand and seafood of the Amalfi Coast.

With Grossi focusing on just one Italian region, Settimo benefits from an exacting menu and rich flavours that communicate how well local Australian produce plays into traditional Italian dishes.

4. Da Biuso, Hamilton

As Brisbane’s only roaming fine dining restaurant, Ba Biuso runs the risk of novelty. Yet, the concept has proven a hit so far, offering a degustation while the dining-room-on-wheels drives around to iconic South East Queensland locations.

When it’s not rolling around the state, you’ll find the Da Biuso bus parked up at Brett’s Wharf in Hamilton with calm water views to reflect the kitchen’s Sicilian influence.

5. Tillerman, Brisbane CBD

Best New Restaurants in Brisbane - Tillerman

Owner Andrew Baturo opened Tillerman in August 2022, stepping up from the now-closed Naga Thai with a swanky 120-seater offering upscale meat and seafood dishes along with a beefy 150-bottle wine list.

Naga head chef Suwisa Phoonsang tackles the brief with confidence and a sense of value, listing big, generous dishes like a 5-score Wagyu flank with suet vinegar and beef jus, and Fremantle octopus carpaccio.

6. Ramona Trattoria, Coorparoo

Brisbane’s string of new Italian restaurants continues with Ramona Trattoria, coming from owner Ashley-Maree Kent who is best known for her work at San Fransico’s legendary Tartine Bakery.

Between fried mozzarella sandwiches and house-made pizza toppings, the hand-made pasta sits as the kitchen’s signature offering. And so far, locals have been showering the kitchen with praise just months after it celebrated its one-year anniversary.

7. Allonda, Newstead

Allonda is one of the best new restaurants in Brisbane.

Popular European diner Nota now has a sister restaurant with Allonda in Newstead. And it’s just as trendy and bright, favouring a minimal design with food that’s equally pared back. Powered by an easy-drinking wine list, the cosy eatery is another positive step towards the modernisation of Newstead’s dining scene.

8. Babylon, Brisbane CBD

With great views of the Brisbane River and Story Bridge, Babylon is an ambitious Middle Eastern restaurant and bar with three levels spanning several bars, terraces and dining spaces. The prime position at this Eagle Street venue is at Babylon Gardens, a waterfront alfresco bar perfect for any locals or visitors seeking a CBD dining destination to head to after work.

9. Bacchus, South Brisbane

Quality hotel restaurants were rare in Brisbane up until a few years ago. Not until The Calile did locals really start to see a shift in the city’s stubbornly conventional dining scene. Bacchus continues the goodwill in Rydges South Bank, with chef Massimo Speroni directing a tight, focused menu that showcases upscale Italian classics.

10. Rich & Rare, West End

The latest venue from Michael Tassis (of George’s Paragon fame), Rich & Rare represents a departure from the maritime fare for which the prolific Brisbane/Gold Coast restauranteur has been known for the majority of his career.

Instead, Rich & Rare — which occupies pride of place inside The Garden Pavilion at West Village — is an ode to all things carnivorous; with a 150-seat fit out slinging what promise to be some of the best steaks south of the Brisbane River.

To wit: Cassis and his team have put together a menu offering no less than 15 different steak cuts to choose from. Many of these are sourced from the lofty, Aussie A5 Wagyu breed; and left to mature in Rich & Rare’s custom dry-ageing room.

Despite those lofty foundations, Cassis was intent on making his latest project “classy but approachable”. That egalitarian sensibility is most prominent at lunch times: with sub-$30 crowd pleasers like steak frites ($28) or a spaghetti of crab, garlic, and chilli.

How Boss Hunting Chose The Best New Brisbane Restaurants

Although the Boss Hunting office is located in Sydney, various members of the team have the privilege of regular travel for both work and leisure. Between us, we get up to Brisbane quite a lot each year. And we try and maximise our time by eating through the newest restaurants and checking out the latest bars.

As such, we’re able to discuss what new restaurants in Brisbane we’d recommend. And which ones we wouldn’t suggest. The result of those discussions is a list of restaurants we’re confident our readers would be satisfied with.

When judging a restaurant, we consider the food and drink primarily. Then, of course, you have other metrics like service, atmosphere, price point and concept.

Our more information on how we put together these lists, please have a read of our editorial policy.
